What Is a Water Filling Line?
A water filling line is a complete set of machinery designed to take empty bottles, rinse them, fill them with purified/mineral/seltzer water, cap them, label them, and pack them for distribution. It’s the most common and simplest type of beverage filling line, which makes it an excellent starting point for new producers.
Unlike juice or carbonated drinks, still water doesn’t require complex filling technologies like hot-fill or isobaric systems. This means water lines are typically faster, cheaper, and easier to maintain than other beverage lines.
Key Components of a Water Filling Line
1. Water Treatment System
Includes reverse osmosis (RO), UV sterilization, activated carbon filters, and sometimes mineral injection. The treatment system determines your final water quality and must meet local drinking water standards.
2. Bottle Rinser / Washer
Rinse new PET bottles with ionized air or clean recycled bottles with treated water before filling. Critical for hygiene and product quality.
3. Filling Machine (Core)
Uses gravity or overflow filling heads. Gravity fill is faster and simpler; overflow ensures exact level consistency. Both work well for still water. Number of filling heads determines speed.
4. Capping Machine
Screw capping for PET bottles, crown capping for glass. Can be rotary (high speed) or inline (lower speed). Must maintain consistent torque for seal quality.
5. Labeling Machine
Self-adhesive sticker labels, sleeve shrink labels, or wet glue paper labels. Sleeve labels are increasingly popular for full-body branding coverage.
6. Packaging Unit
Shrink wrapping (for multipacks), case packing, or palletizing. Depends on your distribution channel — retail shelves vs bulk delivery.
